Design and Simulation of a Solenoid Actuator for Automated Manual Transmission

Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) enjoys the advantages of the manual and automatic transmission; it is also called semi-automatic transmission or clutchless manual transmission.  Mechanically speaking, the AMT is pretty much like a manual transmission, except that several sensors and actuators perform the clutching and gear shifting work.  In addition to the smoothness of the ride, the ATM has many advantages including the fuel and cost efficiency.  No wonder ATM has become the transmission of choice for most car manufacturers, especially those who make electric vehicles (EVs).  ATM heavily relies on electromagnetic actuators, or the so-called solenoid actuators, to replace the clutching and gear shifting undertakings.  Therefore, the efficient design of such actuators is crucial to the performance of the ATM and the vehicle altogether, especially for the EVs.

In this webinar, we will show you, step-by-step, how to use EMWorks tools to design and optimize a solenoid actuator for an ATM used in an EV.  We shall show you how to produce a sufficient force to shift the gears both for steady state and transient analyses.
